Calimari
I really like Salvador Dali. I adore the atmospheres, scattered objects and his dream-like way of showing you things.
He really was one of a kind and just like my drawings I very much think a lot of art is allowing yourself to be free and
expressing your sub-conscious.
When i tried doing this piece, i was very inspired by the mixture of arts that are the scattered retro imagery, morphed/liquified collating techniques and creating shapes, scapes and environments yourself. Along with a grainy technique to allow colours to merge together a little easier, it’s really great to see.
This was my initial direction, with a photo of some 80’s lady getting out of the pool from Unsplashed. It was quite a cool photo and i realised that my crop and implementing the perspective just didn’t match what I was looking for. I also changed the middle out for an old cassette at one point.
Grain.
I started using a technique where I would make a layer 50% gray, and then put noise on it and overlay it onto the art. This means that every time a lighter colour is met it’s kind of faint, but the 50% gray doesn’t really affect the rest of it. This leaves almost the opposite effect as what Noise would normally do, which is darken or tint the art a little too much. This effect blends colours together, and with sharp enough shadow often you can use a lot of it and still keep the depth.
I’m still finding my happy middleground when it comes to shadow, but recently learning to use lighter or darker colours when it comes to shadow or lighting has been massive massive help.
Shadows
Close up of the shadow, using darker colours rather than just black (or using black and an overlay setting) I find shadows and darkness looks more natural.
Tooth
It was very difficult for me to get this tooth to look right, compositionally I think it suits but without overworking it I have let it be.
Power of Three, Triplets and Thirds.
The power of three, Triplets, thirds. It’s everywhere. Something about “threes” is so satisfying to us. What I tried to implement in this was the rule of 3rds diagonally, hence the positioning of the Tooth, centre piece and head of the flower. I hope to move forwards with a compositional head on in my future work as I think it brings great order to the work.
